Stem Cell Treatment for Muscle Injuries?

Stem Cell Treatment for Muscle Injuries? Can stem cell therapy cure muscle injuries? A recent experiment involving mice suggests that it can. However, whether the same positive results seen in experimental mice can be replicated among human patients remains a question.

When stem cells were injected into mice with muscle injuries, the muscles were not only restored but also grew twice as large. This finding, by researchers from the University of Colorado, may help the medical community find new treatments to muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy. It might also pave a way for people to resist muscle erosion due to aging.

The study, reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine, found that the injured muscles of young mice which were injected with stem cells from young donor mice increased in size by 170 percent. Additionally, the new muscles lasted during the mice’s lifetime – about two years.

Silicone or Saline Breast Implant: Which is Better?

Silicone vs Saline Breast Implant: Which is Better? Which Has the Higher Satisfaction Score? After mastectomy, women who received silicone implants for breast reconstruction tend to be more satisfied with the result, compared to those who received saline implants, a survey claims.

The survey reveals that women who received silicone implants had higher “satisfaction” scores with the look and feel of their breasts after breast surgery.

Dr. Colleen M. McCarthy, surgeon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the lead researcher of the study, clarifies that the scores did not show that women with saline implants are unhappy with the result of their surgery. “These women were still very satisfied with saline implants,” she told Reuters Health but adds that there is a difference in the magnitude of satisfaction between those with silicone implants and those with saline.

Prostate Cancer Detection Test: Early Warning Signs?

Prostate Cancer Detection Test: Early Warning Signs? How do you know you’ve got prostate cancer? Doctors use the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test but this cannot detect early cancer stages and is not very accurate because, to use the words of the Daily Telegraph, it “often indicates problems where none exists”.

Now, a recent research from Bristol University in the UK suggests that early warning signs of prostate cancer can be discovered through protein “growth factors” which are present in higher levels among men with prostate cancer.
