Weight Loss Surgery for Teens: Risks and Benefits. As obesity surgery is now becoming more popular among obese teenagers who are desperate to lose weight, we should be aware of the risks and benefits that weight-loss surgery poses to young people.
According to CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton, the benefits of weight-loss surgery is that it could prevent diabetes and other diseases among young people.
Says Dr. Ashton: “The benefits of this in the teen-aged population is that we will hopefully be able to prevent the diabetes, the high blood pressure, the high cholesterol that we’re starting to see in teenagers who are already obese.”

Gastric Band Surgery for Weight Loss: Is it Safe? There is a need for future researchers that will look on the safety of weight-loss surgery operations among teenagers, researchers suggest after finding out that more overweight teenagers are undergoing laparoscopic gastric band surgery.
The researchers, who published their study online last Sept. 20 in the journal Pediatrics, found out that 590 patients between 13-20 years old underwent gastric band or gastric bypass surgery to lose weight, from 2005-2007.

Weight Loss Tips: Breastfeed Your Baby! What is the similarity between a mother going to the gym and a mother breastfeeding her baby? Both can burn 500 calories a day. Breastfeeding is a pretty cool way of losing weight, huh?
Because of this, the New York State Department of Health has launched a public health education campaign to educate mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding not just to their babies but also to the mothers themselves. Doctors behind the campaign say that new mothers should continue breastfeeding for a year or longer.
The good news is that the number of nursing mothers has increased over the past 15 years. According to the United States News and World Report, at least 75% of babies now were breast-fed for some period of time which is higher than the 60% reported 15 years ago.

Qnexa Side Effects and Adverse Health Reactions. An anti-obesity drug, now under consideration by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, may be an effective cure for those who need it.
The drug (proposed trade name: Qnexa) is “efficacious for weight loss” according to FDA reviewers but the same reviewers also raised safety concerns about the drug.
Some of these concerns that the agency would be looking into before it greenlights the drug (assuming it does) include its effect on pregnant women and its psychiatric side effects such as depression.

Sleeping Weight Loss: Good Sleep Can Reduce Fat? Sleeping for seven or eight hours a day does not only prepare you to face the next day’s challenges. It also helps you lose weight, a recent study states.
Believe it or not but sleeping is apparently another technique by which you can lose some of your body fat. According to a research published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, too little sleep could deprive you from losing body fat.
In the research, 10 overweight men and women ages 35-49 were observed in a sleep lab for two separate two-week periods. In one trial, they slept for 5.5 hours a night and during the other trial, they slept for 8.5 hours a night.
