Is Hyland’s Teething Tablets Safe? Nope! Throw Them Out ASAP – FDA

If your child is using Hyland’s Teething Tablets to relieve himself of teething symptoms, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that you dispose of the tablets now.

According to the FDA, Hyland’s Teething Tablets were found to contain inconsistent amounts of belladonna, a substance which can be harmful in large doses.

Moreover, the agency has received reports of serious adverse events in children taking this product that are consistent with belladonna toxicity. Reports of children who consumed more tablets than recommended because the containers do not have child resistant caps also reached the FDA.

The FDA also advises consumers to consult their health care specialist if their child experiences seizures, difficulty in breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty in urinating and agitation after using the tablet.

Marketed as an over-the-counter homeopathic product, Hyland Teething Tablets has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. It is also not aware of any proven clinical benefit offered by the product, its press release states.

Standard Homeopathic Company, manufacturer of the tablet, has agreed to voluntarily recall its product.

The FDA urges health care professionals and consumers to report side effects of the medicine to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.
