Labiaplasty Risks and Complications

Labiaplasty Risks and Complications. The numbers of women in the United Kingdom seeking “designer vaginas” through genital surgery continue to soar after reaching record levels—and doctors are blaming this on the Internet porn boom.

Experts carrying out an ongoing study at the King’s College in London expressed alarm over the soaring rates of labiaplasty—the surgery done to make labia, or the inner lips of the vagina, smaller or more symmetrical. They warn that the surgery carries many risks in an industry that is mostly unregulated.

The number of labiaplasties in the U.K. is booming. Figures from the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology show that the number of women having this operation through the UK’s National Health System in 2009 rose almost 70% from the previous year. In 2008, there were 1,118 labiaplaties, almost double the 669 in 2007 and almost three times the 404 done in 2006.

Pregnant, Fat, and Overweight: Health Risk to Your Kid?

Pregnant, Fat, and Overweight: Health Risk to Your Kid? Are you pregnant? Are you overweight? Today, most people know that being overweight before and during pregnancy can harm a woman’s health seriously.

But new research shows that being overweight when you’re pregnant can also have health consequences for your child, and these can last into his or her adulthood.

“While it’s pretty well-known that a healthy weight is crucial to a healthy and long life, new research is showing that if a woman is overweight while pregnant, her baby is more likely to be overweight,” said Alan R. Fleischman, M.D., medical director of March of Dimes.

Do Birth Control Pills Make You Fat?

Do birth control pills make women fat? We have some friends who claim that their use of this oral contraceptive made them fat but a new research study by a team from the Oregon National Primate Research Study Center suggests that their is no link between The Pill and weight gain.

However, we won’t blame you if you are skeptical of this particular research because the researchers actually focused on the effect of birth control pills on rhesus macaque monkeys rather than on human beings. Couldn’t they have designed a research method that actually had pill-taking women as subjects?

Pregnancy Risks for Older Women 45 and Above

Pregnancy Risks for Older Women 45 and Above. After age 45, women who get pregnant may face higher pregnancy risks and complications. Their newborn babies also face greater health risks compared to babies born of younger moms, a study at Tel Aviv University suggests.

The study, recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that women who get pregnant after age 45 are three times more likely to experience diabetes and high blood pressure than younger women. They also have higher rates of preterm births and placenta previa, the study concludes.

Researchers behind this study arrived at their findings after looking at how nearly 80,000 women of varying ages fared while giving birth between 2000 and 2008. Among the 80,000 women, only 177 of them were 45 years old or older.

Silicone or Saline Breast Implant: Which is Better?

Silicone vs Saline Breast Implant: Which is Better? Which Has the Higher Satisfaction Score? After mastectomy, women who received silicone implants for breast reconstruction tend to be more satisfied with the result, compared to those who received saline implants, a survey claims.

The survey reveals that women who received silicone implants had higher “satisfaction” scores with the look and feel of their breasts after breast surgery.

Dr. Colleen M. McCarthy, surgeon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the lead researcher of the study, clarifies that the scores did not show that women with saline implants are unhappy with the result of their surgery. “These women were still very satisfied with saline implants,” she told Reuters Health but adds that there is a difference in the magnitude of satisfaction between those with silicone implants and those with saline.
