Study says memory can be boosted by electric shocks. We take it for granted, but practically all of our daily activities depend on having a memory. Talking, reading, understanding, socializing—these all depend on having learned and stored information about our environments.

It’s our memory that allows us to retrieve events from moments ago or from the distant past, enabling us to form habits and learn new skills. If we were unable to access past experiences or information, we’d also be unable to recognize our friends or family, find our way home, understand language, or even knot our neckties. Life would be a series of disconnected experiences—each one new and unfamiliar. Without any sort of memory, we’d quickly perish.

But that’s exactly what happens to six million Americans and 30 million people worldwide who get struck by Alzheimer’s disease. The sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the fifth leading cause of death for people 65 and older, it’s a form of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior.

MDMA PTSD Treatment: Ecstasy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? New findings from a number of studies suggest that MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) — the active ingredient in the street drug Ecstasy — can be incredibly helpful in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and a United States nonprofit is set to undertake many studies to explore this.

American researchers in South Carolina tested 20 people, mostly women suffering from childhood abuse and rape, who received a combination of the drug and psychotherapy. Their findings show that 10 out of 12 — or 83 percent — of the patients who were given MDMA were cured in two months.

Acupuncture for Children: Safety and Side Effects. Acupuncture is safe for children, a recent large study in the journal Pediatrics said, but only in the hands of a trained practitioner.

The meta study—or analysis of 37 international studies—found that about one in 10 children experienced mild side effects like bruising, pain and numbness at the puncture site. But more serious side effects like infections and nerve impairment were rare.

“I would say the circumstances in which the serious harms happened do not reflect the modern-day standard of training and credentialing,” said Dr. Sunita Vohra, a professor of medicine at the University of Alberta on Canada and an author of the study.
