Stem Cell Therapy: Pittsburgh Eye Treatments?

As we’ve reported in earlier post, some American eye patients have gone for stem cell therapy in China. In the near future, the patients might be heading to Pittsburgh if researchers from the Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh succeed in their quest to help restore human cornea transparency through stem cells.

Pittsburgh Live reports on a donation to this research endeavor:

The Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh received a $244,000 donation from the Western Pennsylvania Medical Eye Bank Foundation. It will be used to fund research on stem cell therapy for corneal scarring at Pitt’s School of Medicine, officials said.

Pitt investigators plan to build on animal studies in which stem cells from the human corneas have helped restore transparency when injected into eyes that are scarred and hazy. The donation will be used to prepare the stem cells for human studies.
