Celebrities With Endometriosis

What is endometriosis? How common is it? What causes it? And what famous people are living with this condition?

The Mayo Clinic defines endometriosis as a “painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus (endometrial implant)”. Sounds bad, no? It reportedly causes pain especially during a woman’s period. And it can lead to fertility problems.

The cause of endometriosis has not been established. According to the UK NHS (nhs.co.uk), the following theories are being advanced as the possible cause of this health condition: retrograde menstruation (where the womb lining or endometrium flows backwards through the fallopian tubes and into the abdomen instead of leaving the body as a period); spread through the bloodstream or lymphatic system (whereby endometriosis cells are believed to get into the bloodstream or lymphatic system); problems with the immune system; genetics; and environmental causes.

Sam Faiers, British celebrity (via Cosmopolitan Magazine): It sounds crazy to hear myself say this, but I absolutely embrace my Crohn’s disease. It has caused me agonising pain, made me cry, stopped me from eating, drinking and clubbing, and it has slimmed down my once curvy body. But it has also changed my life and it’s changed me. It’s been a rough journey, and it is most definitely not over, but now I can see that a lot of the changes are good.

(via express.co.uk): Since I have started speaking about it a lot of young girls have had tests and some of them have discovered they have Crohn’s and have caught it before a flare-up.

Celebrities or Famous People Who Had Ovaries Removed to Prevent Cancer

Celebrity Ovarian Cancer Surgery Prevention. Aside from our favorite actress Angelina Jolie, here are other famous people who had their ovaries surgically removed as a measure to prevent cancer. Here’s what the celebrities are saying about why they elected to undergo oophorectomy or the surgical procedure to remove the ovaries:

1. Barbara Walters (via hollywoodlife.com): “My sister passed away from ovarian cancer and I had my ovaries removed. It’s not like having the breasts because people don’t see it. But it’s a decision you have to make — it’s preventative. What I think with Angelina Jolie — she’s such a sex symbol and we associate sex with breasts. And the fact that she did this and has retained her beauty and her sexuality. I think it was brave of her, she did it for her own health, but it was so brave to write about it. A women’s sexuality is not tied up with her breasts.
